Burn Care

At DHR Health, our burn care teams provide coordinated inpatient and outpatient burn care for individuals who need specialized medical and surgical treatment. As part of our Level I Trauma Center, our experts provide care for patients with burn injuries that may involve critical areas of the body, inhalation concerns, or other clinical factors that require close coordination across specialties.

Burn injuries often happen without warning and require prompt evaluation and treatment. Our burn care teams use standardized clinical processes and coordinated care planning to support continuity from initial evaluation through recovery, with a focus on supporting long-term outcomes.

Burn Therapy

At DHR Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy Institute our Physical and Occupational therapists play a crucial role assisting burn patients in regaining mobility, strength, and independence. They create individualized treatment plans that include exercises, stretching, and functional training to improve movement and prevent complications like stiffness and contractures. Through hands-on techniques, adaptive strategies, and specialized equipment, they help patients safely perform daily activities and rebuild essential skills. They also provide education, pain management support, and emotional encouragement to promote long-term recovery and quality of life.

Inpatient Burn Care

At DHR Health Edinburg, our specialists provide inpatient burn care for patients with more serious or complex burn injuries, including burns involving up to 35% Total Body Surface Area (TBSA), to any degree. This level of care supports patients who benefit from continuous monitoring, access to specialized services, and timely surgical care or advanced wound management when needed.

When admitted to DHR Health Edinburg for inpatient burn care, our experts will provide ongoing clinical assessment and individualized treatment planning based on burn severity, injury location, and overall medical needs. Our burn care team provides care involving surgical intervention, intensive wound management, and coordinated support across our hospital to promote stabilization and recovery.

Inpatient burn care may be appropriate for injuries involving areas where function or appearance can be significantly affected, such as the face, hands, feet, genital area, or major joints. It may also be needed for electrical or chemical burns, burn injuries related to smoke or hot gas exposure, or burns that occur alongside other traumatic injuries requiring coordinated care from our specialists.

Outpatient Burn Clinic Services

At DHR Health Edinburg and DHR Health Brownsville, our specialists offer outpatient burn care for patients with burns involving up to 15% TBSA, to any degree. These services are designed for patients who need specialty wound care, structured follow-up, or continued monitoring as healing progresses.

Outpatient care includes evaluation and treatment of minor to moderate burns, follow-up visits after hospitalization, and ongoing wound management during recovery. When appropriate, our burn care teams may also provide surgical care such as excision or skin grafting, along with continued monitoring to assess healing and address concerns early.

At DHR Health, we support patients with burns that require advanced or frequent dressing changes, smaller full-thickness burns that are stable for close follow-up, mild chemical exposures that need reassessment, lower-voltage electrical burns from everyday sources, friction-related skin injuries, or cold-related burn injuries that benefit from wound evaluation and recovery support.

Specialized Burn Management

Some burn injuries require a higher level of expertise because of where they occur and how they can affect long-term function or appearance. At DHR Health, our team of experts provide specialized management for burns involving the hands, face, inhalation-related injury, and other high-risk anatomical regions. These injuries often require careful treatment planning, close monitoring, and coordinated involvement across our health system to support healing while reducing the risk of long-term complications.

Scar Management and Rehabilitation

Recovery from a burn injury often continues well beyond initial wound closure. At DHR Health, our team of specialists support ongoing recovery through scar management, follow-up care for skin grafts, and coordination with rehabilitation services when appropriate. This phase of care focuses on improving function, supporting skin healing, and maintaining skin integrity through continued treatment and follow-up, helping patients return to daily activities and long-term wellness.

Patient and Family Education

Education plays an important role in burn care and recovery. At DHR Health, we provide patients and families with guidance on wound care, dressing management, pain control, and what to expect during recovery to support healing after discharge. Our burn care team will also offer burn prevention education to help reduce the risk of future injuries and prevent complications such as infection, both during recovery and in everyday settings.
