Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program

Welcome Message from the Program Director

It is with great pleasure that I welcome our inaugural class to the Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program at DHR Health.  The creation of a new fellowship program offers an exciting opportunity to build something purposeful from the start and your arrival marks the beginning of our legacy.

Training in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas places you at the center of a dynamic and deeply meaningful clinical landscape. The region’s diverse population and substantial burden of hematologic and oncologic disease provide an exceptional foundation for learning. During your fellowship, you will care for patients with a wide range of malignant and benign conditions, sharpening your diagnostic reasoning, clinical decision-making, and commitment to compassionate, culturally informed care. Our curriculum is designed to ensure comprehensive exposure across hematology and medical oncology, while supporting academic curiosity and multidisciplinary practice.   Our goal is to train the next generation of clinical oncologist and hematologist, with the goal of bridging access and services to underserved populations.

As a fellow, you will be immersed with offering comprehensive care in an academically and professional nurturing environment.   Part of your training reliant on collaborative management with other specialties through participation in tumor boards.   In their final year of training, fellows will be exposed to complexities of providing multidisciplinary oncologic care to rural communities, by having part of their clinical experience in Rio Grande City.

As a Commission on Cancer accredited facility, we are committed to improving the well-being of our community by focusing on providing high-quality, compassionate, and patient-centered care, ensuring safety and utilizing advanced technology to serve all, including those with critical needs or with an inability to pay.   As a top performing SWOG, formerly Southwest Oncology Group, performing site you will be immersed in the process of providing access to clinical research trials to a traditionally underserved population.
At DHR Oncology Institute we look forward to working closely with you and supporting your academic and personal growth. Together, we will build a program grounded in excellence, collaboration, and service to our patients and community.  We are confident that with our training with you have the clinical knowledge to face the demanding challenges of oncologic and hematologic practice.

Sincerely,

Jose Cruz, DO, MPH

Mission and Program Aims

Mission Statement:

DHR Health operates within the socio-political context of the South Texas Rio Grande Valley (RGV). This context influences its mission, operations, and priorities. DHR Health was established in 1997 by a group of local physicians who currently serve on our governing board and are faculty in our GME programs. They came together to address limited healthcare access challenges in the RGV, a region lacking adequate public and county hospitals. Our region is plagued by the social inequities and disparities, found only in few regions throughout the nation. The area’s high poverty rate (33%) and uninsured population (35%) limit access to multidisciplinary healthcare, timely treatment and research; which are essential in achieving great outcomes, especially in devastating chronic illnesses such as oncology and hematology. This program is structured with the goal of addressing these health disparities, while educating and exposing our fellows to the complex healthcare challenges prevalent in underserved, disenfranchised and rural communities, such as those in the RGV. Our fellows abide to the high standards of our Sponsoring Institution's (DHR Health) mission, which is to improve the well-being of those we serve with a commitment to excellence: every patient, every encounter, every time. DHR's vision is to create a world-class health system to advance medicine and increase access for the communities we serve by empowering caregivers to heal through compassion, knowledge, innovation, integrated care, and excellence. DHR CARES defines our values which include Compassion, Accountability, Responsibility, Excellence through Knowledge, Safety and Social Conscience. The DHR Health Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program will be dedicated to training inclusive, comprehensive fellows characterized as clinicians, scholars, educators, future leaders and patient advocates. Our supportive and socioeconomically diverse environment fosters academic and personal growth, as well as compassionate, high quality, patient-centered care. We are committed to serving our community, especially the underserved, by delivering excellent care always - without exception. Our mission is to provide fellows with a well-rounded education and multidisciplinary clinical experience in an educational environment beyond just the practice of medicine, such as quality improvement, patient experience, informatics, education, leadership, and advocacy. We pride ourselves on our excellent, world-class patient care as well as our family-oriented residency and fellowship programs.

Program Aims:
  1. To train our fellows to become a referral source to all populations of patients and general physicians- in rural, underrepresented and other special environments – for patients that lack access to multidisciplinary hematology and oncologic care.
  2. To promote and foster multidisciplinary management of cancer care, while educating fellows that every member of the healthcare team plays an important role in the treatment of this chronic illness.
  3. To create an educational environment that fosters scholarly activities with an emphasis on quality improvement, research and community health to benefit not only the program but also the community and hospital system.
  4. To promote social justice by advocating for equitable health care, without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, social status, or ability to pay.
  5. To promote the translation of the latest scientific knowledge to the bedside and ensure that all patients receive the most scientifically appropriate, multidisciplinary care that is up-to-date care, patient centered and cost-efficient.
  6. To empower our fellows, residents and medical students to promote the health and well-being of our multicultural and socioeconomic diverse community, with an emphasis towards serving the undeserved, those challenged by healthcare disparities and lack of access.

We are committed to building a team with a variety of backgrounds, skills and views, by ensuring fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all residents, faculty, and staff. We strive to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups, due to race, ethnicity, language, culture, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, socioeconomic status, physical or mental disability, and others.

We appreciate the unique abilities and perspectives of our diverse workforce and community. By creating an environment where faculty, physicians, residents, fellows, and staff can be their true selves at work without fear of judgment, we aim to foster creativity, raise productivity, and improve organizational performance. We believe that all our faculty, physicians, residents/fellows, and staff play the critical role in the overall success of the organization and the vision we have for our community. We create a sense of belonging at the workplace, where employees are appreciated for their unique contributions, recognized for their accomplishments, supported in their career goals, and have a sense of connection to how they are positively impacting their community.

Through community partnerships, we generate transformation within our institution as a means of advocating for better care for our patients, creating a more diverse physician workforce, and serving our community.
