Gastric Bypass Surgery
The most commonly performed weight loss surgery, gastric bypass surgery is a highly-successful procedure that restricts food intake and calorie absorption. It involves dividing the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch, and then rearranging the small intestine to connect to both. By creating a direct connection from the stomach to the small intestine, food is ingested slower, limiting the amount of food the body breaks down and turns into stored fat.
Gastric Sleeve Surgery
About 75 percent of the stomach is removed in gastric sleeve surgery. This is a restrictive surgery that limits the amount of your stomach can hold. Less food equals less calories, which leads to weight loss. Another perk of this surgery is the decreased production of the "hunger hormone" because of the decreased size of the stomach.
Informational Seminar
Before you begin your weight loss journey, attend an informational seminar to learn about the weight loss surgery options and how to develop a clear plan for success. We offer both in-person and online seminars, in English and Spanish.
Nutrition and Fitness Classes
We want everyone to have a successful weight loss surgery. Because of this, our bariatric surgery team helps patients plan and follow individualized diet and exercise guidelines. To make these guidelines easier to follow, we provide free nutrition and fitness classes. Once a month we offer healthy a cooking class and almost daily we have group fitness classes that focus on exercises such as light cardio, yoga and strength training.
Pre-and Post-Surgery Weight Loss Support
Before you embark on your surgical weight-loss journey, we want to make sure you're given the right education and tools needed for long-term weight control. Our team of obesity medicine physicians, nurses and dietitians will inform you about how to best prepare for surgery, the risks and complications involved with each procedure and how to plan and implement effective weight-loss and maintenance strategies into your daily life. After surgery, our bariatric support group will provide you with an opportunity to connect with other patients, share common experiences, and learn about the latest research into post-surgical diet and exercise for bariatric patients.
Psychological Support
Because obesity is a complex disease that involves all aspects of your life, preparing for bariatric surgery may involve meeting with our psychiatrist to explore issues related to emotional eating that may impact your success following weight loss surgery. We’ll help you identify unhealthy eating patterns, learn how to cope with pressure from friends and family members, and develop the support system you need throughout your weight loss journey.
ReShape Dual Balloon
The ReShape Dual Balloon is inserted in the stomach during a short outpatient procedure, where it remains for six months, serving as built-in portion control so people may feel full and less hungry. It does not change or alter the natural anatomy of the stomach in any way. During this time and for the six months after removal, patients receive frequent in-office diet and exercise coaching sessions and access to the ReShape Patient Portal, an online support resource that provides tools and information to help patients track weight loss, diet, and exercise, and an on-line community where they can interact with each other.
Revisional Surgery
As effective as weight loss surgery can be, not all procedures will have the same results. If you had a surgery that didn't have the results you wanted, a revisional surgery may be appropriate for you. This surgery can be performed if you regained excess weight or if your original procedure needs to be modified, like adjusting a band or a sleeve, or reducing the size of available stomach again to stimulate more weight loss.
